Complainant, who is visually impaired, was hit by a bus

A sub-inspector has been placed under suspension following a complaint by a visually impaired man that the police officer refused to accept his complaint for over 40 days.

The complainant, Anthony, 50, and his wife Mary, also visually impaired, reside at Tamilnadu Slum Clearance Board flats at T.P. Chathram. They earn their livelihood by singing prayers at churches.

On February 24, Mr. Anthony left for a church in Kilpauk. An MTC bus hit him while he was walking on road and sped away without stopping. His right hand was broken and a surgery was performed at a government hospital. He lost his livelihood as he was admitted to hospital.

After the accident, the traffic investigation wing of Anna Nagar police station investigated the case. They neither registered his complaint nor traced the bus that hit him, he said.

“After the treatment and discharge from the hospital, I had to approach the police station several times to enquire about the development in the case. There was no response from them for the past 40 days,” Mr. Anthony charged.

Certificate denied

The police told him that they could not trace the MTC bus that hit him. He wanted a copy of the FIR to get compensation but his repeated pleas went unheeded. A certificate was denied on the ground that the Assistant Commissioner had gone for training.

On Tuesday, he lodged a complaint with Commissioner A.K. Viswanathan. His complaint was forwarded to the Deputy Commissioner, Traffic, West for further action.

Following an inquiry, sub inspector V. Mohan, attached to Traffic Investigation, Anna Nagar, was placed under suspension.
