Nagpur: A full-grown tiger died of drowning in Melghat Tiger Reserve (MTR) in Koha area on Wednesday. Post mortem was conducted on Thursday. This is 8th tiger death this year in Maharashtra and 41st in the country.
According to sources, six-year-old male (T-32) was found dead in a perennial waterbody with steep rocks, 5km from Koha protection camp, under Gugamal division.
Sources said the tiger was first noticed by a guard around 11.30am. Post mortem could not be conducted the same day as it was evening by the time PCCF and NTCA representatives, veterinarians and officials reached the site.
Sources said all body parts were intact but the tiger died as it could not come out of the 18-20 feet deep waterbody despite attempts to climb the slippery rocks. The nail marks on the rocks were visible. Two days ago, the tiger had killed a sambar in the same area.
This is the third tiger death in Melghat region. On March 23, a tiger was found dead in Akot division while another was found dead on January 11 in territorial area outside the reserve.
