Pune: Kin of woman who died of burns say her father opposed marriage

Mangesh Ranasingh and Rukhmini
PUNE: The brothers-in-law of Rukhmini Mangesh Ranasingh (19) of Nighoj, who succumbed to burn injuries in Pune on Tuesday, claimed her father had threatened their brother.
Mangesh is in Sassoon General Hospital battling for his life with 40% burns.
The couple was set ablaze by Rukhmini’s father and other relatives on May 1 in a hut in Nighoj village in Parner taluka of Ahmednagar district, about 100km from Pune. The Parner police, who are investigating the murder case, have maintained that it is a case of honour killing.
They have already invoked murder charges against Rukhmini’s father and other relatives and arrested her uncle Surendrakumar Bhartiya, alias Dhillu Pandit, and another relative, Ghansham Saroj. They are looking for her father, Rama Bhartiya, and other relatives.
On Tuesday, TOI spoke with Mangesh’s brothers Vikrant and Mahesh at Sassoon hospital. “Mangesh is pursuing his third year BA from a Shirur college and working as supervisor at construction sites in Pune and Ahmednagar,” Mahesh said.
The Ranasingh family resides in Nighoj village while the Bhartiyas migrated to the village four years ago from Uttar Pradesh. They work as labourers in the village. “Mangesh and Rukhmini met two years ago and fell in love. However, Rukhmini’s father opposed their relation and threatened Mangesh,” Mahesh said.
Mangesh told his family about his love for Rukhmini. “We did not oppose it. My father went to talk to Rukhmini’s father. However, they vehemently opposed it. Even so, Rukhmini and Mangesh decided to get marries,” Chandrakant said.
A wedding ceremony was arranged in Alandi in November 2018. Despite an invitation, Rukhmini’s parents and other relatives did not attend, Chandrakant said.
“After the wedding, Rukhmini began to stay with us. On April 28, this year, her parents called her to visit them and attend the village fair. Rukhmini went to her parents’ home but Mangesh realized that they were planning to send her back to Uttar Pradesh,” Mahesh said.

When Mangesh went to bring her back, her family members beat them up. Mangesh’s hand was fractured and he sustained a head injury, his brother said.
“Rukhmini’s parents and other relatives locked them up in a small hut adjacent to their home and set it ablaze,” they said.
