The Thiruvananthapuram city police have arrested a youth for an alleged chain-snatching attempt made on an IPS trainee a few days ago.
The accused, identified as Salim, 29, of Manikavilakom in Poonthura, was arrested by the Thiruvallam police after being apprehended by the city shadow police.
Futile attempt
He had allegedly made a futile attempt at snatching a necklace from Thiruvallam station house officer (SHO) Aishwarya Prasanth Dongre when the officer was on her morning walk from Thiruvallam junction towards Vazhamuttom.
The incident had taken place near Pachalloor by around 7 a.m. on Saturday when the motorcycle-borne assailant attempted to snatch her necklace.
After his attempt was foiled, the accused fled along the NH-66 bypass.
CCTV cameras
According to R. Prathapan Nair, Assistant Commissioner (Fort), while Ms. Dongre had noted the digits on the registration plate, the vehicle brand was identified through images that were captured by CCTV cameras installed in the area.
An investigation conducted through the showrooms of the motorcycle brand reached a crucial turn when the sleuths zeroed down on an outlet in Kollam that had sold the particular vehicle.
Registration
The finding enabled the police to identify the accused under whose name the vehicle was registered, the officer said.
While the accused is suspected to be a habitual eve-teaser, his criminal antecedents are yet to be known. He was remanded to judicial custody after being produced at a local court.
