Rahul apologises to SC over Modi remarks issue

Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday "apologised unconditionally" to the Supreme Court over wrongly attributing to the court his chowkidar chor hai remarks to allege corruption in the controversial Rafale deal.

He also said that these remarks were "unintentional, non wilful and inadvertent". In a short affidavit filed through lawyer Sunil Fernandes the Congress president said that he held the court in high esteem and had not intended to demean it in any way.

"The deponent most respectfully prays that this Hon'ble Court may be graciously pleased to accept the instant affidavit and close the present contempt proceedings," the affidavit said.

The affidavit came after a court rap at the last hearing in which the court objected to him justifying the remarks and only expressing regret over the remarks attributing chowkidar chor hai to the court.

Now it is up to the court to accept his apology or not. The court had said at the last hearing it may or may not accept his apology. Courts always accept apologies unless the person is a repeat offender.

The court has so far exempted Gandhi from personally appearing in the case. His case is being argued by senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi. But should the court reject his plea he will have to appear in court to defend himself.

The contempt case against Rahul Gandhi has been initiated by BJP MP Meenakshi Lekhi.
