Several users say ‘Akshaya Tritiya’ should invoke charity

Despite messages on the social media advising people against buying gold on the ‘Akshaya Tritiya’ as the festival symbolised compassion and not material wealth, several women thronged jewellery outlets here on Tuesday.

It became a tradition to buy gold on the festival 15 years ago, but with the advent of social media, the practice declined. Several messages there influenced people to give up buying gold as it went against the “spirit” of the festival.

This time, several such message did the rounds and one such message read - Akshaya, which means ‘unending prosperity’, should not be read as material wealth, but inspire people to feed the poor, help the needy and be compassionate. “There are more number of buyers at our store this year. But gold sale is expected to be more or less similar,” says Abhay Pokarna, Managing Director of P. Jain Jewellers, Tirupati.
