Why Chanel’s cruise show symbolised the beginning of a new journey

It seemed almost fitting that Chanel’s latest cruise show took place on a train. The Grand Palais was once again transformed (over the years it’s been a supermarket, a beach, a ski resort to just name a few avatars) into a Beaux Arts-style train station that took 10 days to construct. Why fitting you ask? Because it was the debut of Virginie Viard, the right and left hand of Karl Lagerfeld, as she showcased the beginning of her solo journey at Chanel, a house that will remain for many, synonymous with Lagerfeld.

It wouldn’t be Chanel if there weren’t looks for the luxe jet setter and emblems of the house—leather, tweed, pearls were omnipresent, as was a classic monochrome palette and also refreshingly a smattering of pastels. The overall mood seemed softer, more relaxed, on one hand feminine with bows, ladylike mini skirt suits but balanced with the workman trouser that showed up in multiple iterations.

Call it a riff on the obsession with athleisure and streetwear (especially when it comes to what now counts as acceptable travel wardrobes), but classic jackets showed up as multi-pocketed parkas and a three-part backpack that’s sure to dominate #airportstyle in the coming months. Scroll through the gallery below to take a look at Chanel’s cruise show.
