After HC, now SC cancels 16% Maratha reservation in PG admissions

Nagpur: After Nagpur bench of Bombay High Court, now Supreme Court too on Thursday ruled in favour of general category students by quashing 16% Maratha reservation under socially and economically backward classes (SEBC) quota in admissions to postgraduate medical courses for current academic year (2019-20).
While directing the state to reconduct the entire admission process, the apex court also extended March 18 deadline for completion of PG admissions by a week till May 25.
The apex court’s division bench comprising justices L Nageswara Rao and Mukeshkumar Shah dismissed special leave petition (SLP) filed by Maharashtra government challenging the Nagpur bench’s order where it ruled that the CET cell’s March 8 notification on PG medical admissions should be applied for those processes which would commence on or after November 30.

On May 2, justices Sunil Shukre and Pushpa Ganediwala at Nagpur bench had clarified that the March 8 notification would have no application to medical admissions that began on October 16 and November 2 as NEET brochure was published on these dates for MDS and MD/MS/PG Diploma courses respectively. After these dates, online submission of forms were started last year.
While clarifying that the SEBC quota would be made applicable from the next academic year only, the HC had declared provisional PG seats matrix of March 27 that made a provision for SEBC candidates as “illegal”. The HC had partly allowed the pleas filed by PG aspirants Dr Shivani Raghuwanshi, Dr Pranjali Charde, Dr Sanjana Wadewale, Dr Aditi Gupta, Dr Anuj Laddhad and others.
