It’s just not the soaring temperatures Mumbaikars have to bear, even rising vegetable prices are worrying the city residents. According to the Maharashtra Times, the prices of vegetables have gone up to Rs 100 to Rs 120. Due to lack of vegetables like cluster beans (Gavar), French beans and capsicum rates have gone up. There has been a significant drop in the supply of green vegetables at the wholesale market following a rise in temperatures across the state. The supply may dip further if the temperature keeps rising.
The rise in vegetable prices is due to substantial differences between demand and supply is normal, prices have started rising earlier than usual. Prices of most vegetables like a pointed gourd, ladies finger, beans, bitter gourd, peas, cluster beans, green chillies, and a few others have witnessed a hike in their wholesale and retail prices. However, traders fear that if temperatures continue to soar, there is a possibility that vegetable prices will go up further in the days to come.
Retail pricing of vegetables:
Capsicum: Rs 120 to Rs 140 per kilo
Green peas: Rs 160 to Rs 200 per kilo
Cauliflower: Rs 160 to Rs 180 per kilo
Tomato: Rs 40 to Rs 50 per kilo
