TNAU puts 2 BTech courses in abeyance for one year

Coimbatore: The Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) has put two of its BTech courses — Agri Information Technology and Bioinformatics — in abeyance for a year as it has planned to revamp the courses to make them more employable and increase their scope to help graduate students take up postgraduate courses later.
Dean of agriculture M Kalyanasundaram said committees were set up to assess the courses after a discussion in the academic council. “Following assessments, the committees reported that the courses have to be modified to suit current trends and to make them more in line with employability criteria. After the reformations and changes in nomenclature, we would reintroduce the courses next year after getting accreditation from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR),” he said.

Meanwhile, the online registration process for admissions to UG courses offered by TNAU, its constituent and affiliated colleges, began on Wednesday. Kalyanasundaram said there was a good demand for various courses. “We started the registration by 9.30am on Wednesday and by noon, we received around 5,000 applications,” he said.
The university has for the first time this year modified its rules to allow students who had studied physics, chemistry, biology and computer science in Class XII to apply for BSc agri courses. Earlier it had insisted on physics, chemistry, biology and mathematics for the course.
