NEW DELHI: Three years after he went off radar, notorious gangster and contract
killer Paramjeet Dalal was arrested by Special Cell during an early morning encounter on Tuesday. Dalal, who had a reward of Rs 1 lakh on him, opened fire at a
police team that gave him chase in Rohini. Police returned fire and hit him in the leg.
DCP (special cell) Sanjeev Kumar Yadav said Dalal was rushed to a hospital for treatment and will be arrested upon discharge.
In 2009, Dalal had murdered a businessman for which he went to Tihar Jail. In July 2016, he was granted bail for three weeks but he jumped it and went underground. It didn’t take him long to form a gang.
Just a month after his escape, Dalal and his associates kidnapped a real-estate businessman named Ram Pratap. Dalal and his aide, Pradeep, were wearing police uniforms when they intercepted Pratap’s car while he was returning home from office. Initially, they demanded Rs 25 lakh for his release but later extorted Rs 90 lakh. Dalal had been on the run ever since and was among Delhi’s most wanted gangsters.
“Several teams were working to nab Dalal. Teams were sent to NCR cities, Haryana, western UP, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand but he managed to remain at large. One of the teams stayed outside Delhi for about a month, trailing him. On several occasions, the team chased him down from Himachal Pradesh-Uttarakhand border to Delhi, but every time he had a narrow escape,” DCP Yadav said.
It was becoming difficult to track his movements as he kept changing his phone numbers and hideouts. But the police didn’t give up.
On the evening of May 6, the cell’s northern range received a tip about Dalal coming to Rohini in a white Swift on Tuesday. A special team comprising ACP Manoj Dixit and inspectors Puran and Pankaj was dispatched to nab him.
Dalal was to collect money from his source in Pootha Kalan village to fund a new hideout in Himachal Pradesh. “Around 5.15am, Dalal was spotted near a T-point on Helipad Road in a white Swift (no. DL 9CAR 4649). While one vehicle went after him, the other police car rushed to counter him from the opposite direction and blocked his movement. When asked to surrender, he whipped out his pistol and opened fire,” DCP Yadav added.
Two bullets hit constables Sonu and Anil but they were saved due to their bulletproof jacket. Police retaliated and Dalal got shot near his knee and fell. But even as he fell, he continued to fire intermittently. He was eventually overpowered. His pistol was taken away and he was taken to a hospital.
