Dharwad: The
traffic police and the
RTO have launched a drive against those ferrying people in goods vehicles.
On Tuesday, seven teams of traffic
police under the leadership of ACP M N Rudrappa and inspector Murugesh Channannavar stopped goods vehicles entering Dharwad from Savadatti, Navalgund, Kalghatagi, Hubballi, Alnavar, Haliyal and Belagavi and convinced the drivers that it is an offence to ferry labourers and other people in goods vehicles. Police also warned the drivers that they would be penalized if the offence is repeated.
The police action comes in the wake of a direction from deputy commissioner Deepa Cholan. At a recent meeting on labour safety, she had asked enforcing officers to educate and warn drivers about the law and then go for punitive action.
Police will warn errant drivers for three days and then start taking action against them from Friday.
