May incident blown out of proportion: Goodwin

Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin has staunchly defended prize recruit Steven May, saying May's recent indiscretion has been blown way out of proportion.

May on Tuesday apologised to the Demons' playing group after an image emerged of him drinking a beer at a Richmond bar on Sunday.

Former Melbourne coach Paul Roos hit out at May on Monday, claiming football "wasn’t his priority".

But speaking before Wednesday’s training session at Casey Fields, Goodwin stood by his man.

"Steven is disappointed because he knows it’s not the right thing to do, but in saying that it’s not a big issue," Goodwin said.

"I think it’s gone way over the top in terms of the issue itself.

"He’s doing a lot of work internally to be a really good player at the Melbourne footy club.

"There’s been some accumulation of events and stories have been spoken about, where it’s painted Steven in a picture that’s probably not correct."
