Parents of M. Santhiya, a differently abled medical aspirant who died while returning home after appearing for NEET at a centre in Madurai on Sunday, have presented a petition to Collector K. Veera Raghava Rao, seeking financial support and a government job for the mother of the girl.

The father of the girl, Muniasamy, a daily wage worker from Pappanam village near Kamuthi, accompanied by his wife and family members, visited the Collectorate here on Wednesday, and urged the Collector to take up the issue with the government and arrange financial support and a government job for his wife.

He said his daughter, who studied at Muslim Higher Secondary School in Abiramam, had prepared hard for NEET, but she looked dejected after the examination. She had scored 299 out of 600 in Plus Two, but she could not attend any coaching class.

While returning home in a bus on Sunday, Santhiya told her father that she was not satisfied with her performance and doubted whether she would be able to join a medical course, Muniasamy said. He told her not to worry and that she could appear for the examination next year even if she failed.

But she fainted in the bus and became unconscious, he said. When she was taken to Tirupuvanam Government Hospital, the doctors said her pulse rate was low and referred her to Madurai Government Rajaji Hospital, but she died on the way, he said. The family had great hopes in Santhiya, the first of his three children, he said.
