School shooting in Colorado leaves one student dead

An 18 year-old has died after two students opened fire at a Colorado school on Tuesday (May 7).

Several others are hurt, some in critical condition.

The latest U.S. school shooting took place here at the STEM School in Highlands Ranch, a Denver suburb.

The students who attend range from kindergarden to the 12th grade.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) HOLLY NICHOLSON-KLUTH DOUGLAS COUNTY UNDERSHERIFF SAYING: "There were a number of shots fired as officers were arriving.

They could hear gunshots as they were entering the school." According to police, two suspects have been taken into custody.

One of them - a minor.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) TONY SPURLOCK DOUGLAS COUNTY SHERIFF SAYING: "Both of suspects, we believe, were students of the STEM school.

(Are they among the injured?) They're not injured.

We have no further information about the suspects and we did not have them on any radar that we know." An emotional scene as children were reunited with their parents, with stunned kindergartners and weeping high school students rushing to their loved ones.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) UNIDENTIFIED PARENT SAYING: "I would like to think I'm okay in an emergency and apparently I'm not, because it's my child." The shooting happened just five miles away from Columbine High School, where, in 1999, two students killed 13 people before committing suicide.

As for Tuesday's shooting, law enforcement officials say they can't comment on any possible motives but an investigation by the FBI is underway.
