Mayor Gianni De Martino said that they have a big problem and have to find a solution. We all have heard of the famous plastic island exists in the sea.

From May 15 onwards Cutlery, plates, cups and anything else made of plastic that is not recyclable or biodegradable will be banned.

Before the summer season starts off the rules will remain applicable to the whole island with main focus on the beaches and coastlines.

Anything made from single-use plastic will be prohibited by the shopkeepers to sell, they have been allotted a period of 90 days to clear the existing stock.

An investigation was carried out in 2017 by the Legambiente, an Italian environmentalist association which showed that found the sea and coast between Capri and mainland Italy contained the largest amount of plastic residue in the region of Campania.

The island of Procida and in the city of Naples there are plans to pass laws banning single-use plastics.

De Martino said that they were seeking to imitate each other to have a better impact.Earlier Capri had introduced a tourist tax and its proceeds are partly used to help care for the environment.

The rest of the European Union is not prohibiting single-use plastics until 2021. Although Capri is taking the lead but it is not the first one to do so.
