AGRA: A 20-year-old youth, Abhishek Kumar was arrested from
Gurugram by
Mainpuri police for allegedly faking his own abduction to get ransom money of Rs one lakh from his family to fund his lavish lifestyle.
According to police, the youth left home on pretext of joining some private company dealing in health related equipment in Aligarh on April 22. On April 28, Abhishek’s father, Kashmir Singh received a call from his son’s cellphone. The caller claimed to have kidnapped Abhishek. Kashmir Singh is a farmer.
The caller threatened Kashmir Singh, resident of village Nagla Mahanand, to deposit Rs one lakh in Abhishek’s account before May 6 if he wanted to see his son alive. A few hours later, one of Singh’s neighbour’s son received pictures of Abhishek lying on the floor with his hands and feet tied up.
Abhishek’s father immediately contacted SP Mainpuri and told him about the entire conversation. SP Ajay Shankar Rai said they suspected something was fishy owing to the circumstances and financial condition of the family. He said that they tracked Abhishek’s mobile phone from which the ransom call was made. The location traced stated that the call was made from Gurugram.
A police team was immediately dispatched to Gurugram where Abhishek was found buying a bottle of water from a shop in sector 18 near IFFCO chowk.
During interrogation, Abhishek told police that he needed money so he staged his own abduction. Police said that he took help of one Chotu who works at a shop in Gurugram to make a call to his father and paid him Rs 50 to do the job. However, Chotu was not arrested by the police.
A case has been registered under section 384 (extortion) and 420 (cheating) of IPC against Abhishek.
