Relatives stage dharna; police bring the situation under control

An eight-day-old infant has gone missing from the government hospital at the district headquarters here on Tuesday morning. Police are trying to trace the woman who took the newborn away.

On May 3, the baby girl was admitted in the hospital with jaundice and was undergoing treatment. On Tuesday, the infant was taken to the treatment ward and was later handed over to another woman instead of her mother Madhavi, creating commotion at the hospital. When asked, Vanitha, a hospital staff member who brought the baby from inside the ward, said she had handed over the infant to the mother.

Irate over this, Madhavi’s relatives smashed window panes and doors of the hospital and staged a dharna. For Madhavi, the baby was the first born after 10 years of marriage.

Police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control. They were checking the video footage at the hospital to identify the woman who took the baby away.
