The men who made a statement on the Met Gala 2019 red carpet
Stealing the spotlight from the women at Met Gala 2019, the men attending the glamorous evening served up some inspiring gender-fluid ensembles, staying true to this year’s camp theme

In an interview leading up to Met Gala 2019, Anna Wintour predicted that it would be the men taking the fashion risks you want to look out for, and boy was she right. From Harry Styles’ painted nails and that sheer Gucci blouse putting his tats on display to Billy Porter’s dramatic Egyptian pharaoh-inspired entry that gave Lady Gaga a run for her money, this year’s Met Gala, true to theme, kept things camp. Scroll ahead to take a closer peek at some of our favourite gender-fluid looks debuted at the prestigious event.
Harry Styles and Alessandro Michele
Harry Styles, who was one of the Gala’s five co-hosts (with Anna Wintour, Lady Gaga, Alessandro Michele and Serena Williams), wore a sheers pussy-bow blouse look from Gucci. “I think fashion is supposed to be fun,” he told Liza Koshy in a Vogue interview posted on YouTube. “And I think it’s a good time for that right now, people being who they are and stuff.” Gucci creative director and master of modern camp, Alessandro Michele, accompanied him on the red carpet looking pretty in pink, and flaunting a crystal headband with his signature beard and cascading hair.
Billy Porter
Take notes Gaga—this is how it’s done. Six men in gold pants and body chains carrying a palanquin featuring a Billy Porter clad in an immaculate gold catsuit by cult kids, The Blonds. A wing span of ten feet across and a headpiece of 24 karat gold, this outfit and dramatic entrance is the only visual definition of camp we need.
RuPaul
Anna Wintour had us anticipating this look for a while. When asked what RuPaul might wear in an interview, she’d said, “I wouldn’t dream of telling Ru what to wear, I think nobody understands how to make an entrance better than he does and I hear he’s taking it very, super seriously and we look forward to being delightfully enthralled.” Arguably the queen of all drag queens, one had huge expectations for this one, especially given the theme. He chose to wear a suit. A great suit, but a suit; we’ll let you be the judge.
Cody Fern
Upping the ante from his Golden Globes look, the young Australian actor kept things quirky in a look by Maison Margiela. His pairing of old school dandy makeup and futuristic space cowboy fashion was impactful to say the least.
Ezra Miller
Ezra Miller gets our vote for turning up in some of the most interesting looks time and again. For Met Gala 2019, Miller turned to Burberry for a cinched pinstriped suit complete with a train, revealed on the red carpet from under a white silk cape. But the true drama was behind the blank mask he carried. Five optical illusion eyes were strategically painted on his face to keep you guessing, as a bold lip and an old Hollywood wig completed the look.
Darren Criss
Golden Globe winner Darren Criss went with a bedazzled look for Met Gala 2019—complemented by stunning makeup. Don’t miss the bright blue nails, blue eyeshadow and giant bow poking out from under his crystal-embellished jacket.
Hamish Bowles
Purple, feathers, peddle pushers, heels and a cape; there’s probably no one apart from Andrew Bolton who has a better understanding of camp than Vogue editor-at-large Hamish Bowles—as proven via his Met Gala 2019 outfit.
Jared Leto
What’s more camp thanks carrying a replica of yourself on the red carpet? Taking cue from the Gucci’s fall/winter 2018 collection, Leto does exactly that.
Jordan Roth
Broadway producer Jordan Roth kept things theatrical. We’ll just let his cape do the talking.
