The Thane Police Crime Branch on Monday solved a murder case within nine hours of the victim’s body being found. According to the Thane Crime Branch officers, the body was found in Hiranandani Estate in Thane (West) with injuries on the neck, head, cheeks and hands at 4 a.m.
The Wagle Estate police took the body to Thane Civil Hospital for post-mortem and registered a case of murder against unknown persons under the Indian Penal Code. Meanwhile, the Unit V of the Thane Crime Branch started parallel inquiries into the case.
“We showed a picture of the body in the area and with the help of local residents were able to identify the deceased as Govind, also known as Banarsi. The people also told us that he was a contract labourer hailing from Odisha,” said police inspector Jairaj Ranaware, Unit V, Thane Crime Branch. The Crime Branch received information that Govind had an old friend named Raju Chavan.
“We were also told that Mr. Chavan was spotted with bloodstains on his shirt in the early hours of Monday. It pointed the needle of suspicion towards him. We then started searching for him,” Mr. Ranaware said. Over the next few hours, multiple teams searched Waghbil and nearby areas and cornered Mr. Chavan on Ghodbunder Road. Mr. Chavan, on being questioned, allegedly confessed to having killed Govind.
“Govind, according to Mr. Chavan, had a habit of using abusive language and would frequently abuse his mother and sister, which angered him. He has claimed that this anger led him to stab Govind repeatedly with a sickle after a drinking session on Monday morning,” Mr Ranaware said. Mr. Chavan was placed under arrest following his confession. He was handed over to the Wagle Estate police for further inquiries.
