SC rejects opposition parties\' review petition to increase VVPAT verification in Lok Sabha polls

In a big setback to opposition parties, Supreme Court today rejected the review petition to increase the VVPAT verification during counting in the current general elections.

The apex court bench headed by Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi rejected the review petition filed by 21 opposition parties seeking a direction to increase verification of Voter Verified Paper Audit Trail(VVPAT) to 50 percent in the general elections.

"We are not inclined to modify our order," SC said while dismissing review plea on random matching of VVPAT slips.

On April 8, the Court had directing the Election Commission to increase VVPAT verification with EVMs to five polling booths from one per assembly segment.
