NEW DELHI: Finance minister
Arun Jaitley on Tuesday dubbed Congress a "cry baby" for attacking the
Election Commission after its recent clean chit to PM
Narendra Modi over opposition charges of breach of
poll code during his
poll speeches.
He said, of late, a tendency has developed amongst the parties to excessively allege violation of the MCC by their opponents. "Congress as the 'Cry Baby' of this poll, is leading the pack. Article 19(1)(a) confers to every citizen the right to free speech," he said.
Calling for a harmonious balance between the implementation of MCC and the right to free speech, Jaitley said in his blog: "Let us take some recent illustrative cases. In the first, the PM appealed to first time voters to keep in mind the sacrifice of the martyrs when they vote in an election. No party or candidate was mentioned. The second illustration is a comment made in relation to Congress chief contesting the election from Wayanad.
A reference here is made to the demographic composition of the new constituency. If such speeches are considered by anyone as violative of the MCC (
model code of conduct), that may actually run the danger of the MCC's constitutionality in relation to free speech being called into question."
