After temporary relief brought by cyclone Fani, mercury starts soaring in Kolkata

KOLKATA: At 37.2 degree Celsius Kolkata singed on Tuesday. Met office sees no respite from the scorcher for now. Brace for more heat as the the mercury is all set to soar further in the coming days. Cyclone Fani must have brought temporary relief for a couple of days. But at present there is no system that could keep the heat at bay.
“For now there will be no respite from the heat. In fact we expect the mercury to cross 38 degree Celsius mark very soon. There is no major weather system that could trigger rain to play check mate to the rising mercury,” said GK Das, director (weather) at Regional Meteorological Centre. Kolkata.
Even as Tuesday’s temperature was a tad lower than that of Monday (37.9 degree Celsius), incursion of the hot and dry Northwesterly wind, made the heat unbearable.

During the day a 34-year-old who was standing in the heat near Ultadanga footbridge fell ill, suspected to be a case of heat stroke. Madhav Mondal, a resident of Purba Kalika, Kajipara, North 24 Parganas was rushed to ESI Hospital Manicktala, where he was declared dead.
“The patient was declared brought dead by our doctors. The body was sent for post mortem. The autopsy report should confirm the cause of death, whether heat stroke or other reasons,” said Dr Mayukh Roy, medical superintendent at ESI Hospital, Manicktala.
