Video has captured the dramatic moment an alleged carjacker accused of rape jumped off a bridge into a river in an attempt to escape police.
The 29-year-old man was pulled from the Nerang River by police after he jumped off the Ross Street Bridge at Benowa in the Gold Coast on Monday.
The bridge jumper was allegedly speeding in a stolen car with fake number plates at 11am when police spotted him.
His car ran over police spike strips on the bridge so he got out of the vehicle and allegedly tried to steal another car at knifepoint.
A man was seen trying to pull the driver from the front seat of the car.
Police approached him before he jumped from the bridge into the river in a desperate attempt to escape.
He was seen swimming freestyle in the river before police caught up with him and pulled him out of the river.

He was charged with attempted robbery, dangerous operation of a vehicle, driving without a licence and two counts of obstructing police.
The man was also charged with rape and stealing in relation to an incident on May 5 at Ormeau Hills.
He was due to appear in the Southport Magistrates Court on Tuesday.
