PUNE: The Hadapsar police on Sunday night arrested an autorickshaw driver and his five accomplices for assaulting and
robbing a 42-year-old passenger of a smartphone and cash, collectively worth Rs18,700.
The incident occurred near Akashwani in Hadapsar around 2.30am on Sunday. The victim, Mohsin Shaikh of Urali Kanchan, lodged an FIR after seeking treatment at Sassoon General Hospital.
The arrested have been identified as Gaurav Gaikwad (19), Jaideep Shah (19), Shubham Kale (19), Ankit Raut (26), Amol Shinde (29) and Rohit Bhosale (25). One more person is on the run.
Shaikh, who works for a jeweller in Hadapsar, got into autorickshaw at Pune railway station around 2am to go to Urali Kanchan. Gaikwad was driving the autorickshaw, while Shah was sitting next to him.
Gaikwad stopped the autorickshaw near Akashwani and demanded money for liquor from Shaikh. When he refused, they hit him with a rock and called their five friends, who rushed to the spot on two motorcycles.
They attacked Shaikh, snatched his smartphone worth Rs18,000, Rs700 in cash and fled. Shaikh was injured on his face, head and back.
He managed to note down the autorickshaw’s registration number and alerted the Hadapsar police. He informed the police about the robbery and gave them the registration number. He then visited Sassoon for treatment. Shaikh then rushed to the police station and registered a first information report under Section 395 (dacoity) of the Indian Penal Code.
“We launched a manhunt for the suspects. Beat marshals tracked down the autorickshaw and took Gaikwad and Shah into custody and seized the vehicle. Another team worked arrested five others and recovered the two motorcycles,” senior inspector Sunil Tambe of the Hadapsar police said.
“Shaikh noticed Shah when he got into the autorickshaw but did not suspect anything. The two men usually try to rob their passengers the same way. If that fails, one of them gives a missed call to one of their accomplices and the whole lot rushes to the spot to rob the passenger,” he added.
“We have recovered the smartphone and cash intact from the robbers. We are trying to track down the seventh suspect. A court has sent the six men to police custody till May 9,” assistant inspector Sanjay Chavan said.
