A 23-year-old man was arrested on Tuesday for murdering his friend and dumping his body on Ghodbunder Road.

The police said Raju Chavan killed Govind (police only have his first name), 35, over a rivalry. Govind was a daily wage labourer.

Shubhada Narkar, public relations officer of Thane police department, said, “On Monday morning, the Kasarwadavli police found a body dumped near the concrete mixer plant at Hiranandani Estate. The body had stab injuries on the neck, head and face. The crime branch formed three teams to crack the case.”

Police suspected the victim to be a migrant and conducted enquiries in localities where migrant labourers live.

The police learnt Govind was from Odisha and lived in a rented home at Kavesar, Ghodbunder Road. Narkar said, “A police informer told us that Govind and his friend Chavan often fought. During interrogation, Chavan confessed to the crime. He said Govind was an old friend but he was upset as he used to abuse him. Chavan decided to take revenge.”

On Monday morning, Chavan took Govind to a deserted site on Ghodbunder Road, saying they would drink together. After Govind was drunk, Chavan stabbed him with a sickle and fled. He has been charged under section 302 of the Indian Penal Code.
