BENGALURU: A newlywed couple committed suicide by jumping in front of a moving train at Veerapura village near Doddaballapura on Monday morning. Their families had opposed the marriage.
Yeshwantpur railway police said
Lakshmipati V, 28, and Leelavathi, 18, from Shantinagar in Doddaballapura, had fallen in love but their parents were against it. They tied the knot a month ago with help from friends and were living together in Shantinagar.
While Lakshmipati worked as a labourer with a timber merchant, Leelavathi was pursuing a diploma course in a private college. Police said the couple left behind a note blaming their family for the suicide. "We registered a case of unnatural death and are recording statements from both families ," railway police said.
Police said the couple left home past Sunday midnight. Manu, a cousin of Lakshmipati, received a text message from him at 3.48am that he and Leelavathi were going to commit suicide and requested him to collect their bodies in the morning. Manu read the message around 6am and alerted his family and friends. Over 20 people rushed to Doddaballapura railway station and began searching for the couple. The bodies were found at Veerapura village near Bashettihalli industrial area.
Manjunath, a common friend, claimed the families opposed the marriage because Leelavathi was still a minor.
