Myanmar today freed two Reuters journalists who had been jailed for violating the official secrets act. At the time of their arrest, they had been reporting on a September 2017 Rohingya crisis in conflict-hit Rakhine state. They walked out of prison, following a presidential amnesty.
Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo were arrested in December 2017 and were sentenced to seven years of jail term each. Reuters has said the two men did not commit any crime and had called for their release. The case prompted an outcry around the world.
Myanmar has denied the charges and said it was defending itself against Rohingya militants, who attacked and killed police officers in August 2017.
