Yavatmal: The Supreme Court has on May 3 ordered service of notices to Senior Investigation Officer of CBI in a contempt petition over a custodial death case of Yavatmal
Shailesh Thakur of Ghatanji filed the contempt plea against Nandakumar Nair, Senior Investigation Officer of CBI. A bench comprising Justice Uday Umesh Lalit and Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul on May 3 ordered notice to Maharashtra state and asked CBI officer Nair to be present in person along with all investigation records. The case will next be heard on July 19.
Yavatmal police had taken into custody two youths, Ajay Mohite and Suresh Sonkusare, in 2003 over a robbery. The duo was brought to the SP office for interrogation. Later, it was said the duo committed suicide.
The SC had ordered the CBI to file an FIR under section 302 of IPC and launch an investigation to bring the truth to light, in October 2017. However, the CBI filed an FIR under section 174 of CrPC and started investigation.
Thakur then approached Supreme Court with a contempt petition, alleging the CBI deliberately flouted the SC order and pleaded for action against Nandakumar Nair.
