BARRACKPORE: A group of around 25 youths, allegedly led by a Trinamool leader,
beat up three
senior citizens - two school teachers and a theatre actor - near Sukanta Sadan in
Barrackpore on Monday afternoon. All three had to be hospitalised.
The incident took place when the three were chatting in front of their apartment soon after casting their votes.
"Suddenly two local Trinamool leaders, accompanied by around 25 youths armed with bamboo sticks, rushed to us and asked us to leave the spot. But we were sitting right in front of our apartment, so we refused. And that is when they pounced upon us," a resident of the apartment said.
The victims later lodged an FIR with Barrackpore police station.
Trinamool-run Barrackpore Municipality chairman Uttam Das, however, said, "We have received a complaint against a leader, who was allegedly involved in the attack on some senior citizens. We are looking into the matter seriously. If he is found guilty, stern action would be taken against him."
Local resident and theatre personality Chandan Sen condemned the incident. "We have never experienced such hooliganism in the past 46 years. We really feel scared," he said.
