Thiruvananthapuram: The
highway stretch between Karamana and Pappanamcode witnessed two accidents on a single day that claimed the lives of two pedestrians on Monday.
In both cases, the pedestrians were mowed down by speeding vehicles while they were crossing the busy road. In one case, the victim died instantly, the other succumbed to his injuries on Tuesday.
The first accident was reported near Pappanamcode Junction under Nemom police station limits. Balan Nadar (78) of Nikhil Bhavan near Pappanamcode was on his way to the local KSEB office to pay the power bill.
As he was crossing the road, he was knocked down by a car. However, the motorist stopped the vehicle and took him to a private hospital at Fort in his car. But, doctors declared him dead on arrival. Later on Tuesday, the motorist turned up at the police following which he was booked for causing death by rash and negligent driving.
Nadar leaves behind wife Devaki and children Mohanan, Thankam, Shobha, Moni and Moly. The body was released to the family by Monday evening after autopsy.
The second accident occurred around 7.30pm on the same day near KSRTC garage at Pappanamcode that falls under Karamana police station limits. Renjith Raj (25) – who hailed from Pathanamthitta and was residing at Viswambharan Road near Pappanamcode Estate Ward – was knocked down by a motorcycle on Monday.
Police said the accident occurred when Raj was crossing the national highway using the zebra lane at Pappanamcode Junction.
A speeding bike knocked him down. The youths on the motorcycle too sustained injuries after they lost control of the vehicle. They were thrown off from due to collision impact. All three were rushed to a hospital. But, Raj succumbed to his injuries around 11am on Tuesday.
Renjith is the son of Raju, a staff of Council of Scientific and Industrial Research at Pappanamcode, and Lissy. He has a sister, Shruthi. He was attending coaching classes for PSC exams after completing his postgraduation. His body was released to the family after autopsy on Tuesday.
