Greater Noida: A 50-year-old man lying underneath his
truck for repairs died on Monday morning when it was hit by another truck from behind. The accident occurred near Beel Akbarpur on the Eastern Peripheral Expressway.
The deceased was identified as Gurdeep Singh (50), a resident of Patiala district in Punjab. He was ferrying plywood from his home town to Etawah district in Uttar Pradesh.
The incident occurred at around 4am, when the deceased had allegedly parked his truck — bearing the number PB10ES6267 — along the road and was lying underneath the vehicle to carry out the repairs.
According to the police, Singh had applied hand brakes before going under his truck. However, the impact of the truck that hit his was so powerful that its tyres skid along the surface and trapped him under it.
“We received information of the accident at around 4.30am, after a passerby spotted the collision and dialled 100. A police team was immediately sent to the spot, but by then, Gurdeep Singh was dead, while the driver of the truck that had caused the accident had fled, leaving the truck behind,” said Ashok Kumar, a sub-inspector posted at Dadri police station.
He added that it seemed the driver of the other truck had dozed off while driving, causing the collision, “Prima facie, Singh had kept the taillights of his truck on, and had also applied hand brake before parking. It also appears that the driver of the colliding truck had dozed off, because of which his truck was totally out of control when it hit Singh’s truck from behind. We have sent the body for autopsy,” Kumar added.
A case has been lodged at Dadri police station against the unidentified driver. “We have booked the unknown driver under sections 279 (rash sriving) and 304A (causing death by negligence) of the IPC, and are making efforts to arrest him,” said Neeraj Malik, the Dadri SHO.
