One dead after vessel capsizes, sinks near Carnac Island

A man in his 60s has died after the boat he was on capsized and sunk in water near an island 10 kilometres south west of Fremantle.

The man was onboard with a man in his 30s when their boat overturned and sunk, leaving the two to tread water after an EPIRB was activated.

Details are still limited, but police said one of the duo was unresponsive as they were pulled from water near Carnac Island.

A short while after being rescued, the man in his 60s died.

The pair had been boating in water near Carnac Island on Tuesday morning when their boat capsized and sunk, leaving them treading water.

The emergency call was made about 10am and the two were rescued by water police.

A police spokesman said the man in his 30s was taken to Fiona Stanley Hospital for medical treatment and the man in his 60s died as a result of the incident.

"Inquiries into the circumstances of the incident are ongoing," he said.

"A report will be prepared for the coroner."
