BHUBANESWAR: The streets of the once lush capital of
Odisha look like a war-torn city with uprooted trees, snapped wires and cables lying all around. While Fani completely battered the main roads, interiors were not spared either. Heaps of garbage lie strewn everywhere.
With sanitation workers of the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) having left for their native storm-hit villages, the work of clearing the city of trees and debris has been badly hit. While the major focus has been on clearing of roads, restoring power supply and emergency services, removing garbage has not been given due importance by the civic authorities even after four days of the disaster.
"The city has turned into a big dumping yard with mountains of garbage all around. It is becoming unbearable to live in the city with stench emanating from the garbage," Smrutirekha Jena, a homemaker and resident of ward no 39, said.
