High CBSE scores will lead to higher cutoffs in Std XI

Nagpur: With high scores becoming the norm, rather than exception, in CBSE Std X results it is very likely that cutoffs in Std XI admissions will soar. Across the country, around 2.25 lakh students have scored more than 90% and over 57,000 students have scored more than 95%.
Even in Nagpur, there are a considerable number of students who scored 90% and above though an official count is not yet available. Social science (SS) subject was the one where maximum number of students scored full marks followed by math, which ultimately pushed the overall scores higher.
Jayati Vasudeo, principal of Kids World School said that this should not be construed as papers coming in easy. “I feel all the credit goes to the students because their level of preparation has intensified. Students not only prepare for it in class but also get extra help in form of tuitions and specialized coaching. All this ensures their marks inch higher in board exams,” she said.
Swati Chouhan, principal of CIPS, Kapsi agreed saying difficulty level was moderate, and not easy as many are believing it to be. “All the credit goes to the students and I feel the new pattern plays an important role. Students have adjusted to this pattern and to the new adopted teaching method that came with it,” said Chouhan.
Vasudeo felt that students scoring above 90% is the result of many things. “Teachers have taken a better approach towards a student’s holistic development. The parent’s perspective is also being taken into consideration along with the students. With this, the student’s individual areas are being understood and worked upon which is why students scoring above 90%,” said Vasudeo.

Chouhan also said that the current traditional board exam system puts extra pressure on students. “Speaking solely at a personal level, I feel that the CCE pattern was better. It provided lot of freedom and encouraged creativity among students, unlike the rote learning that happens now,” said Chouhan.
Vasudeo agreed partially saying there really is not much of a difference between the two apart from marks weightage. “The CCE pattern only divided the syllabus in two parts, marking was different but rest everything remained the same. Being a Science teacher myself, I feel that the current pattern is much better than the CCE pattern because the marking process has become better,” said Vasudeo.
