District’s water supply likely to improve with more showers, say experts

Though the weekend marked by hot, strong winds in Vellore town and other parts of the district, Monday turned cooler after a spell of rain swept through the district.

The dark clouds and the subsequent showers brought much-needed relief to the residents of the district. According to the Regional Meteorological Centre, Vellore received 53.4 mm, Ambur 4 mm, Tirupattur 1.1 mm, Gudiyatham 10 mm and Melathur 11.8 mm rain till 8 a.m. on Monday.

On Sunday, Vellore recorded a temperature of 43.6 degree Celsius during the day, while the minimum temperature was 27.5. Vellore town was among the hottest places in the region for the past week as the average temperature was 43 degree Celsius.

On Monday, a cool breeze blew across the region in the morning but the heat returned in the afternoon.

The day temperature rose to 41.1 degree Celsius from 23.4 in the morning. Though the rain was not enough to bring water flow in the Palar river or most waterbodies and storage dams in the district, Otteri lake on the outskirts of the town managed to retain some water.

This could help improve the groundwater level, according to experts.

More spells of rain in the value of over one or two centimetres would be enough to improve water supply in the coming months, they added.
