PUNE: A young woman succumbed to severe burns in a Pune hospital on Sunday night while her husband is battling for his life after the couple was set ablaze on May 1 by her father and other relatives at Nighoj in Parner taluka, about 100km from Pune in Ahmednagar district. Police suspect it could be an honour killing.
They have identified the deceased as Rukhmini Mangesh Ranasingh (19). Her husband, Mangesh (21), is undergoing treatment in the burns ward of the Sassoon General Hospital. He suffered 40% burns.
“Prima facie, it is a case of honour killing. Rukhmini and Mangesh got married barely six months ago,” investigating officer and sub-inspector Vijaykumar Botre of the Parner police told TOI on Monday.
The police have arrested Rukhmini’s uncle Surendrakumar Bhartiya alias Dhillu Pandit and another relative, Ghansham Saroj, while a hunt has been launched for her father, Rama Bhartiya, and other relatives.
Honour killing: Couple set ablazeSurendrakumar and Ghansham were arrested on Saturday when the police had initially registered acase of attempt to commit murder. On Monday, the Parner police invoked charges of
murder after the Bund Garden police in Pune sent them a report for further legal action.
Botre said, “Rukhmini’s family hails from Uttar Pradesh and had migrated to Ahmednagar about four years ago. The Bhartiyas and their other relatives work as labourers at construction sites in the village and adjoining areas. On the other hand, her husband, Mangesh, worked at a small workshop in the village and is also pursuing higher studies.”
Botre said, “Rukhmini’s family had disapproved of her decision to marry Mangesh, a local villager belonging to another caste in November last year. She had come to her family’s house at Nighoj on April 28. On May 1, when Mangesh arrived to take her back, Rukhmini’s family locked them up in a hut near their house and set it ablaze. The couple’s cries for help drew the attention of some neighbours who managed to open the hut and bring them out in a severely burnt condition. The couple was initially removed to the civil hospital and on May 2 they were shifted to Sassoon hospital in Pune.”
