Offenders sprinkled itching powder to divert woman’s attention and robbed her of ₹6 lakh

The Mettupalayam police have arrested one more person in connection with robbing a woman of money after diverting her attention.

With the arrest of N. Murugandam on Tuesday, the police solved a case that created a sensation in Mettupalayam area after the incident occurred on April 10.

Two persons, Arun Pandian and Moorthy, were arrested a few days after the incident occurred. All three belonged to Tiruverumbur in Tiruchi.

Superintendent of Police Jintha Kothandaraman said the trio were involved in attention diversion cases in Tamil Nadu too.

In the Mettupalayam case, the accused sprinkled itching powder on a woman while she was returning home from a bank.

According to the police, Gandhimathi, 51, and her daughter Pooni drew ₹6 lakh from a nationalised bank at Thattanchavady. The two were returning home with a cash bag on a two-wheeler when the accused followed them and sprinkled powder.

Mr. Jintha said after reaching home, Ms. Gandhimathi developed itching and immediately rushed to the bathroom after keeping the cash in the living room.

Video footage

The accused who were following her went into the house asking for drinking water. When Ms. Gandhimathi’s mother-in-law went into the kitchen to get them water, the accused fled the spot with the cash bag.

Mr. Jintha said they cracked the case with the help of video footage obtained from the bank and nearby places.
