4 drug peddlers arrested

Ludhiana: In two different cases, the Special Task Force (STF) Ludhiana range have arrested four drug peddlers, including a proclaimed offender who escaped from police custody after injuring cops, with 270g heroin. The recovered heroin costs Rs1.31 crore in the international market.
In the first case, STF officials arrested a man in Beant Nagar with 120g heroin he was smuggling in a Maruti Swift car on Saturday night. He has been identified as Ashu Mehta (30) of Urban Estate of Focal Point. Inspector Harbans Singh, in-charge at STF Ludhiana, said Ashu was passing through the area in his car when the STF stopped him for checking, and recovered the heroin.
The official said the accused was into trading of nuts and bolts with his brother. He is a drug addict and started peddling two years ago to meet his need for drugs. During questioning, he said he used to procure heroin from a person named Sanju from Zeera in Ferozepur, and sell it among addicts in the city.
In another case, STF arrested Gurwinder Singh (27) of Mohalla Maha Singh Nagar, Daba; Ravinder Singh Chawla (40) of New Kundanpuri; and Karamjeet Singh (20) of New Shimlapuri with 150g heroin. The accused were arrested from New Atam Nagar of Jassiy road, Haibowal Kalan, on Saturday evening, following a tip-off. The accused were passing through the area for delivery of the heroin in a Maruti Suzuki Swift car, when they were stopped at a checkpost, and the contraband was recovered.

Inspector Harbans said Gurwinder was arrested by STF Mohali on October 2, 2017, with 850g heroin, and he was lodged in Ropar jail. On October 20, 2018, Gruwinder escaped from Mohali court after injuring cops. Later, he was also declared a proclaimed offender by the court. Thereafter, he kept living in different areas, and for the past one month, he was living in Haibowal Kalan.
The official added that another accused Ravinder owned a hotel near DMC Hospital, while Karamjeet earned money only through drug peddling. The trio procures heroin for a Mohali-based smuggler Lakkha, who further sells it to his customers.
