PATNA: Khagaria GRP officials have stumbled upon a luggage lifters’ gang which consists of members of a particular family. More interestingly, the kingpin of the gang, Chandrakala Devi (45), is a ‘crorepati’.
Chandrakala, also called Sangeeta, was arrested by the GRP on Saturday following a complaint lodged by a Munger resident Meera Devi. She had alleged that her daughter in-law's ‘mangal sutra’ was taken away by the former while travelling by a passenger train between Jamalpur and Khagaria on May 1.
During her interrogation, Chandrakala reportedly revealed that her gang mostly comprised her family members and close relatives, who have amassed huge wealth through unlawful activities. She also told the interrogators that she had stepped into the world of crime after she was deserted by her husband Baijnath Sah in 2002. Her gang, according to the GRP officials, is run by her two brothers—Fulo Sah and Manoj Soni alias Dagga--and two nephews besides other relatives.
Chandrakala’s nephews— Jitendra Soni and Praveen Soni—are also involved in crime on wheels. “She has been operating for over a decade. She has amassed huge wealth through unlawful activities. For her, it’s a family business,” said Khagaria GRP SHO A N Dubey.
During interrogation, she revealed that she recently purchased four katthas of land near G D College at Begusarai. In addition, she owns a palatial house at Koria village under Bhagwanpur police station in Begusarai and several plots of land in neighbouring Khagaria and Munger districts.

Barauni DSP A K Jha said that Chandrakala also owns a market complex spread over about eight kattahs of land in Begusarai town. “She lives with her parents at Koria ever since her relation with her in-laws got strained and was subsequently deserted by her husband,” said Jha.
Informed sources said that Chandralaka’s nephew Jitendra was recently released from jail in a case related to luggage lifting from a train at Rosera in Samastipur district. Katihar rail SP Dilip Kumar Mishra said that he has asked the SHO concerned to prepare a list of properties owned by Chandrakala. “We will seek the assistance of the Economic Offence Wing (EOW) of the state police to initiate the process to confiscate her property amassed through unlawful activities,” said Mishra. Police later sent her to the Khagaria divisional jail after interrogation.
