The Congress-led Opposition has stepped up its agitation against the reported reclamation of a 15-acre paddy field at Kunnathunad.
Senior Congress leader V.M. Sudheeran demanded that the State government withdraw the order permitting reclamation of the land.
It was in violation of the provisions of the Kerala Conservation of Paddy and Wetlands Act that the government had issued the order. Moreover, it was by overruling objections raised by the District Collector that the government permitted the reclamation, said Mr. Sudheeran in an open letter to Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, Revenue Minister E. Chandrasekharan, and Law Minister A.K. Balan.
Meanwhile, the Congress will take out a protest march to the wetland area on Monday. V.P. Sajeendran, MLA, will lead the march, which is being organised by the Kunnathunadu Mandalam Committee of the party. UDF convener Benny Behanan will inaugurate the meeting at 11 a.m.
