Three, including couple, reportedly die of sunstroke

Three persons were reportedly killed as heatwave continued to sweep several districts of the State on Sunday.

According to the State’s automatic weather stations’ network, at least 15 locations registered temperatures of more than 46° Celsius and 66 locations in excess of 45°Celsius.

Santhanuthalapadu mandal in Prakasam district registered the highest maximum temperature of 46.99° Celsius.

At Old Coringa, on the outskirts of Kakinada, an agricultural worker G. Kama Raju (77) and his wife Subhadramma (70) reportedly succumbed to heatstroke. According to neighbours, the couple went to work on Saturday. They complained of fever in the morning and neighbours spotted them dead in the evening. Revenue officials, however, were yet to confirm the cause of death.

In Gantyada mandal of Vizianagaram district, S. Demudu (65) reportedly died of sunstroke. However, the cause of the death was yet to be officially confirmed. As per official records, a woman named Papayamma of Pidatamamidi village of Gangavaram mandal died of sunstroke on April 24.

Meanwhile, according to the State Disaster Management Authority, there were as many as 427 cases of heatstroke as of Saturday.

With 177 cases, Kadapa district tops in hospitalisations followed by Guntur (84) and Chittoor (51).

In Prakasam and Nellore too, several stations recorded temperatures not less than 40° Celsius. People remained indoors for most part of the day.

IMD warning

Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department has warned people of Krishna, Guntur and Prakasam districts that severe heatwave conditions would prevail on Monday. Heatwave conditions would prevail in a few mandals of East Godavari, West Godavari, Nellore, Kurnool, Kadapa and Chittoor districts.

At least 447 mandals in the State would witness very hot and hot weather on Monday and Tuesday, according to the Discomfort Index by the AP State Disaster Management Authority.

People are advised to stay indoors and venture out only after taking precautionary measures.
