AHMEDABAD: Sarkhej police on Saturday filed a case of death by negligence against a doctor who had allegedly not conducted basic medical tests before delivery which led to death of a pregnant woman in March 2018.
Police filed the complaint after receiving postmortem reports from a panel of doctors of VS Hospital medical board which stated that no tests were done before or after the delivery, suggesting negligence by the accused doctor.
The complainant, Salim Shaikh, a resident of Taajpeer no Tekro in Sarkhej, stated in his FIR with Sarkhej police that his wife Farzanabano Shaikh had complained of labour pain on March 7, 2018. After which, he rushed her to Dr Nirav Bhatt’s clinic, Devpushp Maternity Nursing Home in Sarkhej. In the night of March 7, 2018 Farzanabano delivered a girl child but she was kept in the labour room for further treatment, stated the FIR.
When Salim asked about his wife’s medical condition, Bhatt told him that she was fine and asked for Rs 2,500. When Shaikh asked him why he was asking for the money, Bhatt told him that he had to call an anesthetist to take stitches as his wife was not able to bear the pain. Salim gave him Rs 2,500 but stated in FIR that the doctor did not take his signature before conducting that medical procedure.
In the midnight on March 7, Farzanabano’s condition began worsening with excessive bleeding. At that time, only two nurses were present there. Later, they called Bhatt, who came there and checked Farzanabano in the labour room. After a while, he told Salim that his wife’s condition was complicated and called three more doctors who also checked her. At around 2am on March 8, they declared Farzanabano dead.

Later, Salim brought Farazanabono’s body to VS Hospital where a postmortem was conducted. After which, a medical board gave the suggestion of medical negligence.
Sarkhej police have registered a case under IPC 304-A (causing death by negligence) and started an investigation.
