Ludhiana: A major tragedy was averted on Sunday morning when a fire engulfed a garment factory on Kakowal Road. Six family members and one labourer were however pulled out from the unit as alert neighbours acted on time. The officials of fire department claimed that the fire was intense and the thick smoke coming out of the building created problems for them to control the situation.
People of the areas said that they had heard screams of children in Saurav Knitwear at around 3.30am. The owner of the factory, Vikas Gupta said, “We were sleeping and suddenly we started feeling suffocated . When we woke up it was thick smoke all around.’’ He said the neighbours helped them to move out and luckily his wife and four daughters along with one labourer came out safely. The officials of the fire department claimed that the fire had engulfed the ground as well two floors of the factory and thick smoke was coming out of the unit. Station fire officer SN Sharma said, “None was injured as everyone was already rescued by the area residents. When we reached the site the fire had spread everywhere.” He said they controlled the situation with the help of 6 fire tenders . The factory was located in thickly populated area and there are residences as well.
