CHENNAI:
India Meteorological Department (
IMD) and Skymet have forecast that there might be
mild rain in the coming week, bringing some respite from the scorching heat.
Skymet in its forecast said on May 7 most parts of Tamil Nadu, including Chennai, will receive rain and thundershowers because a trough that extends from Comorin to Karnataka, including parts of Rayalaseema, is expected to strengthen.
IMD has not forecast rain for the city for the next 48 hours but has said, “The sky condition is likely to be partly cloudy.” But it also said light rain is likely to occur in isolated places over Tamil Nadu on Tuesday.
The upper air trough is expected to strengthen and cause scattered rain in parts of the states in 24 hours and after 24 hours it is expected to further strengthen and increase the spread of rain.
IMD in its inference said, “A cyclonic circulation lies over interior Tamil Nadu and neighbourhood at 1.5km above mean sea level.” It also mentions about a trough that runs from Comorin to Chhattisgarh across Telangana and Rayalaseema at 0.9km above mean sea level.
The system is also expected to bring some respite from the heat. The maximum temperature in core areas of the city was 36.5 Celsius on Sunday. But there was a heat wave in the southern and northern suburbs. Meenambakkam recorded 39.1 Celsius while Thiruthani recorded 42.5 Celsius.
