Humans… we will never perceive the world the same way, and a new study now proves that you’ll also never smell it the same way either.????The research published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America provides new evidence of how different a person’s quote “smell scape” can be from one another.????But don’t flatter yourself thinking you have a better sense of smell than others, no, it’s got nothing to do with that, the study found it’s actually determined by your genetic code.????The researchers examined around 300 people and asked them to rate the perceived intensity and pleasantness of a huge variety of odors.
????many of the odors used are common components of food flavor, providing real-world relevance to the study.????Participants also provided blood samples which allowed researchers to further examine and conclude that quote:????“Small changes in the gene for the receptor can change its shape and how well the odor fits, thereby altering perception of the odor.”????And even though the sense of smell is not as important for humans as it is for animals, the study results are important because, as the New York Times reports, there is evidence that reduced sense of smell has psychological consequences, and it may offer early clues of an oncoming neurodegenerative disorder such as Alzheimer's disease.??
