After 14 years trial, two jailed for a mth

Vadodara: After facing trial for nearly 14 years, two men from Dena village near the city were sentenced to one-month imprisonment for beating up four persons in June 2005. The third accused in the case was acquitted by the court for lack of evidence.
Mahesh Rohit, Natu Rohit and Ganpat Rohit were booked at Vadodara Taluka police station for beating up Kanti Chauhan, his uncle Mahendra Chauhan and two other persons named Mukesh Chauhan and Ghanshyam Bhavanbhai. The trio had issues with Mahendra over borrowing some amount of money. The police complaint stated that Mahesh and Natu had attacked the victims with swords and Ganpat had threatened them.
Kanti registered offence for assault and criminal intimidation against the three following which they were arrested and later released on bail. After the investigation got over, police filed a chargesheet in the court and the trial took place in the court of a judicial magistrate.

The trial began in 2005 and went on for all these years. During the trial, there were several hearings when the accused did not remain present or new dates would be requested by either of the lawyers. After hearing the arguments and examining the witnesses, the court on May 4 acquitted Ganpat and ordered simple imprisonment of one month to Mahesh and Natu.
The court also asked the convicts to pay Rs 7,000 as compensation to the injured persons.
