Long after the PFA Unit II kept demanding a facility for it to perform animal birth control operations, the Coimbatore Corporation finally constructed a building in Ukkadam in 2014-15. But it was forced to close down the facility within two years after the residents of the area complained of dogs being let out in their area and the howling disturbing them at nights.
The lack of a facility for PFA Unit II to carry out sterilisation in 80 of the 100 wards saw an increase in stray dog population.
Coimbatore Corporation officials say that soon after they closed down the Ukkadam centre, they began scouting for land to build a new one.
After dilly-dallying with Vellalore as a possible centre for almost a year, the Corporation gave up the proposal and has now zeroed in on a place near Ondipudur.
The civic body has readied a proposal and pegged the estimate at around ₹ 75 lakh. Once the Election Commission of India lifts the Model Code of Conduct, the Corporation will speed up the process to have an animal birth control centre at the earliest.
