NEW DELHI:
Four friends were duped of Rs 27 lakh by a gang that promised them jobs abroad. A
case was registered after one of the friends filed a complaint on
Saturday. The police are now looking for the gang members.
The complainant,
Dilip Chauhan, told the police that he had met one of the gang members, who introduced himself as Ashish, on March 25 at a coffee shop on Barakhamba Road. The man posed as an agent who got people placed in foreign companies.
Chauhan got interested in the prospect and decided to meet Ashish again to discuss it. Chauhan took three of his friends for the second meeting with Ashish. They all met at Connaught Place where Ashish told them about job opportunities in Malta. He allegedly told them that it will take about Rs 27 lakh to get the four men placed in that country.
Chauhan told the police that he discussed the idea with his friends and they all agreed to pay the sum. Subsequently, the men paid Rs 27 lakh to Ashish in five instalments. Chauhan added that in April, he got a call from Ashish who said his flight tickets were booked for April 23. He then gave Chauhan the address of a three-star hotel in Mahipalpur and asked him to meet him there.
Chauhan went to the hotel on April 22 where Ashish showed him his air tickets and also made him take foreign currency from his men. The four friends were told that Ashish would meet them at the airport the next day. “We waited at the airport but nobody came. We tried contacting the agents but their phones were off. The men also had our original
documents,” Chauhan told the police. A case under Indian Penal Code Section 420 (cheating) was registered.
