AGRA: An
inmate of the
Aligarh jail allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself on Monday. Twenty-eight-year-old Gopal Singh, who was under trial in a dowry death case of his wife, had been in the jail for the past five years.
According to jailor Rajesh Kumar Singh, the inmate went to toilet outside the barrack during the meeting hours and put a stick broom on the top of the "L" shaped wall and used a shoe lace and his stole for hanging himself. Singh told TOI that the inmate had not exhibited any suicidal tendencies and he used to interact with other inmates, and never showed any signs of depression.
The incident occurred between 1pm and 1:30pm when no one was present inside the barrack except a sepoy. Gopal went towards the barrack on the pretext of using the washroom and took the extreme step. His body was spotted hanging when the sepoy was taking a round. He immediately informed his seniors about the incident.
The inmate's body has been sent for post-mortem after completing all the formalities and his family members have also informed of his death, said the jailor. Gopal hailed from Gabhana area of Aligarh and he was lodged in the jail since June 22, 2014.
